The Making Process
At Chester River Pottery, every piece we create carries a story of artistry, patience, and skill. Our process is deeply rooted in traditional craftsmanship, ensuring that each mug, bowl, and vase is functional and a work of art. Let’s take you behind the scenes to see how our pottery comes to life.
Design & Inspiration
Each piece begins with an idea. Whether inspired by nature, history, or a customer’s request, we sketch designs and consider form, function, and glaze possibilities. This stage is about vision, imagining how a lump of clay can transform into something beautiful and valuable.
Preparing the Clay
Before shaping can begin, we prepare the clay by wedging it, a process of kneading that removes air bubbles and ensures an even consistency. This crucial step prevents cracks and weaknesses in the final piece.
Shaping & Throwing
This is where the magic happens. Using the potter’s wheel, we carefully shape the clay, centering it and forming it into bowls, plates, or vases with our practiced hands. Every turn of the wheel balances control and fluidity, and each pot takes on its own character.
Drying & Trimming
After the initial shaping, pieces are left to dry to a leather-hard state. We refine their shape at this stage by trimming excess clay, smoothing edges, and sometimes adding details like handles or decorative carvings.
First Firing (Bisque Firing)
Once fully dry, pieces go into the kiln for their first firing, called the bisque firing. This process strengthens the clay and prepares it for glazing. The kiln reaches around 1,800°F, transforming the clay into a porous ceramic state.
Glazing
Glazing is where the personality of each piece truly shines. We apply carefully chosen glazes, sometimes dipping or brushing, and other times layering colors to create unique effects. The glaze enhances beauty and ensures the pottery is food-safe and durable.
Final Firing
The glazed pieces return to the kiln for their final firing, which can reach temperatures up to 2,300°F. This firing vitrifies the clay and glaze, strengthening the pottery. The kiln’s unpredictable nature creates subtle variations, ensuring no two pieces are identical.
The Finished Piece
After cooling, each piece is inspected for quality. Those that meet our high standards are prepared for new homes, whether on our shelves, in a gallery, or in the hands of a customer who will cherish them for years to come.
