How It’s Done, The Clay

About The Clay

One aspect of pottery is recycling clay. Let’s face it, not every piece we make is worthy of glazing and firing. The good news is, prior to bisque firing you can crush a piece, add water to reconstitute the clay, re-wedge it and start again.

Where Did The Trimmings Go?

Additionally, in the studio there is always a bucket of sloppy water filled with clay pieces you are throwing. You will also have fine shavings from trimming. You can combine the trimmings to make a sloppy mud texture that you can dry, re-wedge and re-use. Mason stains can be added to your recycled clay to create colored clay in a rainbow of colors.

What About The Rest

There always seems to be a small amount of clay that you just don’t want to throw away. Thus, my introduction to ceramic jewelry began. I take those tiny scraps and make beads and pendants which. Have become one of my most popular items.
